Domestic violence

This is a specific type of hate crime usually, but not always, directed to women.

Domestic violence is controlling behaviour and includes physical, sexual or emotional abuse that takes place within an intimate or family-type relationship. This included gay and lesbian relationships and family relationships such as the abuse of older people, forced marriage and honour crimes.

We also recognise that domestic violence can be caused by a partner, ex-partner, someone acting on behalf of an ex-partner or other situations that do not necessarily include sexual relationships such as where older people are concerned.

  • One in four women and one in six men will be a victim of domestic violence in their lifetime
  • On average there will have been 35 assaults before a victim calls the police

What we can do

We are committed to believing survivors of domestic abuse and violence and may need to carry out some sensitive enquiries. These will be done carefully and without putting you at risk.

We work with the Sanctuary Project who will help you stay at home with extra security and specialist support.

In an emergency you may have to be sent to a hostel or refuge if space is available but only with your agreement. In some situations we will provide permanent re-housing.

Taking action against the offender

If the person causing the harassment is a Nottingham City Council tenant, the City Council and us will take action to enforce the conditions of the tenancy agreement through a variety of actions including warnings and possession proceedings.

We will only take action against a perpetrator of domestic abuse with your consent.

Sometimes we will apply for an anti-social behaviour injunction order. This tells the offender not to contact, assault, threaten or harass you and can include an exclusion area that they are not allowed to enter under any circumstances.

These orders are often used when the offender has caused criminal damage at a council property such as breaking windows, where the person has caused nuisance and annoyance to other residents due to arguments and fighting at the property and so on. In most cases, you will not have to go to court as long as you are willing to give us a statement.
