Clifton is a large purpose-built council housing estate situated to the south of the City of Nottingham. When it was built (1951-1955) it was the largest Council estate in Western Europe.
The estate comprises of predominantly 2, 3 and 4 bed houses. Later additions included Southchurch Court, a high rise block built in the late 1960s and the Nobel Road estate built in the mid 1970s. There are also 6 warden-aided complexes built between 1970 and 1984. Owner occupation now makes up around 70% of the population.
The Meadows is a large estate nearer the city. The part of the Meadows near the Trent embankment is older Victorian terraces and the area bordering onto London Road is largely 1970s houses and flats built when a large part of the original Meadows was demolished in a mass house clearing programme.
