Making homes in Bestwood secure warm and modern

Work is now well underway in Bestwood to fit thousands of council homes with new kitchens, bathrooms and central heating.

The work is part of Nottingham City Homes’ Secure Warm Modern (SWM) programme that will make sure all council properties meet the national Decent Homes standard by 2013.

Our partners, Frank Haslam Milan (FHM) and Vinshire Plumbing and Heating, are busy installing brand new facilities in the Bestwood properties that need them.

FHM is working on the Modern living side of our Secure Warm Modern programme. They will fit kitchens, bathrooms and electrical upgrades to properties whose current facilities need modernising.

Vinshire Plumbing and Heating are carrying out the Warmth for Nottingham programme, fitting boilers, radiators and fires to homes that need it.

We will be holding a ‘Meet the Partners’ event on Thursday 25th June at Bestwood Park Church, Beckhampton Road, Nottingham, NG5 5NH, from 10am to 6pm.

Tenants will have the chance to talk to our partners about what to expect when they have work done. They can also see examples of the kitchens, bathrooms and fires, as well as radiators and boilers.

Before any work is carried out on individual homes, a tenant liaison officer will visit to discuss the details of the work.

Tenant Susan Hill, of Bardsey Gardens, was the first in Bestwood to benefit from the improvements. Mum-of-one Susan, 31, had a new kitchen fitted by FHM in less than a fortnight. After living in the house for eight years, she is now continuing the makeover by decorating it throughout. She said:

The new kitchen has made an unbelievable difference to my home, and although I have been carrying out some improvements the house did badly need the work. The quality of the work and the caring manner of the staff that have been in the house has been first class. I think this area is really going to notice the benefits of this partnership as it continues these improvements in Bestwood.”

We also offer a Helping Hands scheme which is available to elderly and vulnerable tenants to help make the process a little easier. This means we can phase work, offer to complete it while people are out of the house, or sometimes be there while work is done.
