Reaching out to the islamic community (notts fire and rescue release)

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service has organised a fire safety and recruitment event, for the local community in the Bobbersmill area.

With Ramadan coming to an end and the celebration of Eid around the corner, firefighters are using the opportunity to highlight seasonal fire safety messages, with particular emphasis on safe cooking within the home.

The event will take place at Bobbersmill Community Centre at 1.30pm on Friday (25 September), after the close of prayer at the nearby mosque. Firefighters will be on-hand delivering fire safety messages to local people such as safe cooking with oil, as well as the necessity of a smoke alarm and having a planned escape route. They will also be giving out recruitment information to local people, with the hope of encouraging more applications from candidates of with a BME (black or minority ethnic) background, to the fire service.

The event has been organised by Community Safety Advocate Guninder Nagi who explains the significance behind it. She said:

After Ramadan is the festival of Eid, when families and communities get together to cook great feasts and celebrate the breaking of their fast. At this time of the year fires caused by cooking materials can be more common, so we are trying to provide local people with the information to keep them safer.

I would especially urge those celebrating and all members of the local community to ensure they have a working smoke alarm installed within their homes and to test the batteries weekly. We hope to get lots of people down to see us on Friday where they can learn how to celebrate safely and prevent accidents from happening in their homes everyday.

This event follows a fire safety campaign that has been broadcast across Radio Dawn, providing local residents with the information to cook safely in their homes, as well as integrating the work of the fire and rescue service within the community.
