Join for Joel - bone marrow registration session (from BBC Radio Nottingham)
In 2008, a six year old boy from Nottinghamshire touched the hearts of listeners to BBC Radio Nottingham.
Joel Picker Spence, from Farndon, had Leukaemia and he appeared regularly on my show (and in the Evening Post) to appeal for a bone marrow donor to save his life. Although a donor match was eventually found, it was too late for Joel and he died before he reached his 7th birthday.
BBC Radio Nottingham is supporting an event in Joel's memory to raise awareness of bone marrow donation and encourage others to join the register. On Wednesday 2 June, between 2pm and 7pm, the Anthony Nolan Trust is organising a testing session at Nottingham's Council House (in the ballroom) where volunteers can register as a bone marrow donor with a simple "spit" test. This should take around 15 minutes.
Would you be prepared to publicise this session with your staff? I'll be happy to mention on my show any business or organisation that does this in the run up to the event. To join the register, you need to be aged between 18 and 40 and be in good health. There's more information here....
