Third family member fined for fly-tipping (NCC and Notts Police release)

A woman from Bestwood has become the third person from the same family to be fined for fly-tipping at the Beckhampton Road Recycling Centre.

Zowie Burley 29, of Broadwood Road, was caught after the vehicle she used to transport the waste was recognised by an Envirocrime Officer from City Council’s Community Protection service.

Christine Walker from Community Protection said:

The fly tip was caught on CCTV and I recognised the vehicle. It was only when I interviewed the owner, I discovered that it belonged to Mrs Sarah Munro who had been caught fly tipping with her husband three days earlier.

In May 2010, Kevin Munro, 48 and Sarah Munro, 40, from Hazel Hill Crescent in Bestwood were shown leaving bags of rubbish at Beckhampton Road recycling centre.

Both parties pleaded guilty to the offence at Nottingham Magistrates court on the 6th May, and were fined £100 each, plus £15 each victims surcharge, ordered to pay £200 towards the investigation costs and £80 towards the clear up cost.

Ms Walker said:

Ms Burley had used her aunt’s vehicle to take a large number of bags of waste and boxes to the car park at Beckhampton Road. She had to be arrested in order for us to interview her, as she was uncooperative.

Ms Burley was also found to be driving without a driving license as her current licence had been revoked. She was subsequently prosecuted for the offence and ordered to pay a fine of £200, costs of £85 and received six points on her licence.

Ms Burley received £220 for the offence of fly tipping and was ordered to pay £215 costs and a victim surcharge of £15.

Richard Antcliff, Head of Neighbourhood Enforcement said:

This whole episode ended up costing Ms Burley £750 in total, plus six points on her license. The fly-tipping issue at Beckhamption Road recycling centre has been a serious problem for residents and used to cost the City Council thousands of pounds to deal with. The problem has all but stopped in this area and we hope this prosecution will reinforce the message that we are serious about eradicating it.
