Fine for woman who dumps carpet in road

A woman from Radford has been ordered to pay a fine and costs of over 341 pounds after being caught fly-tipping on Garden Street in January 2010.

Yanique Mahabeer, 27 of Hornbuckle Court in Radford was witnessed by a member of the Community Protection CCTV team last January as they made their way to work.

John Broomfield, CCTV manager for Community Protection said:

Ms Mahabeer had parked her car and had appeared to be acting strangely. She and her accomplice had got out of the car and the boot was open. As they got back into the car and drove away, I noticed that they had left a large cream coloured carpet in a heap in the middle of the road, presenting a huge hazard to traffic.

Richard Antcliff, Head of Neighbourhood Enforcement for Community Protection said:

When interviewed under caution, Ms Mahabeer admitted the offence but claimed her male accomplice, whose name she could not remember, was supposed to throw the carpet over some safety fencing onto a piece of derelict land to the rear of Radford Mill. Ms Mahabeer seemed to think that this was a perfectly acceptable practice.

Ms Mahabeer pleaded guilty to the offence at Nottingham Magistrates Court on the 17th January 2011.

Mr Antcliff added:

This was both reckless and dangerous offence. Fly-tipping is illegal and costs the taxpayer thousands each year to remove. We hope this will act as a reminder to Nottingham citizens that waste should be disposed of by a registered waste carrier or by taking the items to a recycling centre.
