Two year prison sentence for ASBO breach beggar (NCC release)

A prolific beggar has been handed a two year jail term after breaching his ASBO five times in just one month.

Leon Sylvester Lee, 42 of Carlin Street in Bulwell was made subject of an indefinite Anti-Social Behaviour Order on 30 June 2010 after being arrested four times for begging between 7 Jan and 20 March 2010.

Lee's behaviour was at times aggressive and of nuisance to businesses and members of the public. The terms of the order were made to prohibit Sylvester from begging within Nottingham City Centre.

Despite the order, Lee continued to offend, committing five counts of begging and between 12 September and 13 October 2010.

As a result of these breaches, Lee was put before Nottingham Crown court on 21 Jan 2011 and received a custodial prison sentence of 24 months.

Richard Antcliff, Head of Neighbourhood Enforcement for Community Protection said:

This case demonstrates the penalties for breaching a civil order. We have consistently reduced begging in the City through a mixture of education, support from partner agencies and strong enforcement. This prison sentence should act as a warning, breach of ASBO is a serious offence and perpetrators should expect to be dealt with firmly.
