Allocations policy
Our allocations policy explains who can go on the housing register. This is often called the 'waiting list' by applicants.
It also explains who can and can't apply to go on it.
How do I apply to go on the housing regiser?
You need to fill in a form and provide us with a number of 'proofs' to show your name, address, national insurance number and so on. One of these must also have your photograph on.
You must have been living in the city for at least six of the last 12 months, or have a close family member (such as a child, parent, sibling) who has lived in the city for this time. This is called a 'local connection'.
Some people cannot apply to go on our list. This is explained below.
Read a summary of Nottingham City Council's housing allocations policy, which Nottingham City Homes has to follow and the other Homelink partners follow voluntarily.
Who cannot go on the housing register?
You will not be able to go on the housing register if:
- you are not allowed to stay in this country permanently but only under certain conditions. You are not 'habitually resident' and therefore are not allowed to receive any housing from us. If this is the case, it will be explained to you.
You may not be able to go on the housing register if:
- you have a record of anti-social behaviour
- you are aged under 18 years. We will not normally consider you for a property until you are 18 but there are exceptions to this
- you owe rent (rent arrears) either at your current Nottingham City Council or housing association property. There are exceptions to this but you will have to arrange to pay all the arrears off if you are accepted onto the register
Can I be removed from the housing register?
We will remove you from the housing register for three years if we think you are unsuitable to be one of our tenants. This could be because you:
- have broken your tenancy conditions with us or another social landlord
- have deliberately damaged a city council or social landlord's property
- have a serious history of criminal or anti-social behaviour
- have threatened or been violent to one of our employees, any of your landlords or the police
- have an anti-social behaviour order (asbo) or similar order against you which bans you form being in certain areas of the city. More about this is explained in our section about anti-social behaviour.
More about our allocations policy is explained in the page called 'banding'.
