Transforming Nottingham's neighbourhoods
On 20th September 2011 Nottingham City Council's Executive Board agreed to proposals which will see a number of our properties, mainly flats, demolished over the next five years.
This is proposed to include over 900 properties. The plans are part of a wider programme to transform Nottingham's neighbourhoods - including building hundreds of new council homes across the city by 2017.
Despite being given little time to do it by the Government, we were able to get responses from three quarters of the 1,000 tenants affected in this phase when we consulted them in August - with 68% backing our proposals.
Every affected tenant has been sent a letter explaining the decisions made about their homes, following the consultation.
Cllr Alex Ball, Executive Assistant for Housing and Regeneration, said:
This would be the biggest council house building programme in the city for more than 30 years - but it depends on the Government's final 'settlement' when the system for paying for council housing changes next year. We've been told by the Government we have to make tough decisions about ageing and poor condition properties that need to be demolished, as part of the financing deal.
Director of Housing Gill Moy said:
I know for many residents this will be an unsettling time. More than 900 homes across the city are affected, so we need to make sure we have suitable alternative accommodation for everyone. We will need to plan this - so we are developing a timetable which will be a phased approach to demolition. This means it may be some time before we demolish and rebuild in some areas.
