Your own improvements

We are happy for you to carry out improvements to your home.

However you must get written permission from us first.

Please bear in mind the following when you are thinking of doing your own improvements - some are more difficult than you think.

  • you must write to us, and get written permission from us for the work you want to do
  • you must use suitably qualified tradespeople to carry out the work, for example a Gas Safe (used to be called CORGI) registered gas fitter if you want a new fire installing or a registered electrician for some new wiring
  • you may have to lay out extra money for bigger jobs. For example some works may need bulding regulations or planning permission, such as large conservatories, new walls and foundations. This is all subject to a charge. Some flats have a limit to the number of satellite dishes that can be put up
  • you may be able to get compensation for work you have done to your house when you leave. Repayment is calculated on a formula set by the government
  • we will need a copy of any relevant certificates you get for work. For example, if you install a new gas fire, we will service it after 12 months and we need information about this

Remember

If you do work which is left in a dangerous condition, we will ask you to put it right at your own expense. If you cannot do this, we will carry out any necessary work and charge you for it. Similarly, if you carry out work which needs the relevant persmissions, you could be made to demolish any walls or structures that do not conform to relevant building requirements.
