Aids and adaptations
We want to make sure that all our tenants are able to live as independently as possible.
We want you to live as independently as you can in your home but sometimes you may need help to do this.
For example, you may need:
- ramps and paths to help you get into your home more easily
- an improved kitchen or bathroom layout if you use a wheelchair
- electrical switches and controls in a more accessible position
- a flashing light doorbell if you are deaf
- a few extra handrails to help you move up the stairs
How do I get help if I have a disability?
This service is carried out by Nottingham City Council's Adaptations Agency on our behalf. It will design and arrange adaptations to suit you and your home on the advice of the Occupational Therapy Team or City Deaf Team. You will be visited to have your needs assesssed. The full service includes:
- applying for Building Control approval in some cases
- drawing sketches and plans for more detailed building work
- helping to find builders
- arranging contracts
- visiting to check the work is carried out appropriately
- sorting interim and final payments
For more information on help available to people with disabilities, please go to the disabilities section on Nottingham City Council's website.
Is help available for older people?
If you are an older person you may qualify for the PAD (Preventative Adaptations for Older People) scheme. This provides small adaptations to help increase the safety in your home and prevent falls.
It is a FREE service for anyone aged over 60, even if you are not a council tenant. For more information on minor improvements, please go to the PAD information on Nottingham City Council's website.
Who can apply?
You need to register with Nottingham City Council's Occupational Therapy Team or City Deaf Team to have an assessment made.
If you are a Nottingham City Council tenant, these adaptations are FREE of charge. Non-city council tenants can also get adaptations work done. The process is the same but you may have to pay for some of the work. Depending on your circumstances, you may qualify for a Disabled Facilities Grant to pay for some of the work. This will be worked out by a 'means test'.
