Sheltered housing

Sheltered housing gives people, usually over the age of 60, the chance to live independently with support from the staff of Nottingham City Homes.

we have over 60 sheltered housing complexes across the cityWhat is sheltered housing?

In the Nottingham area we have various sheltered housing complexes. All the accommodation is fully self-contained, which means you have your own front door. We do not have bedsits or ones with shared facilities. Some have their front door directly from the outside and some have their front door off a communal corridor (sometimes called 'corridor' complexes).

Most of these properties are one bedroom flats, but we also have two bedroom flats and a number of bungalows. Most of the flats are in buildings no more than two storeys high and most have lifts. We also have flats in some high-rise blocks with great views over the city. Complexes vary in size of between 16 and 96 properties.

We have sheltered housing in most areas of the city. The pages in this section show the number and type of accommodation that we have. At any one time only a few of these properties are available. They are advertised on Nottingham HomeLink and in the Nottingham Post on a Monday.

Who can apply?

We will give preference to anyone over the age of 60. We will also consider people over 55 who are getting Disability Living Allowance. You can also apply for sheltered housing if you live outside the Nottingham City boundary.

Why should I live in sheltered housing?

One of the best reasons is that you get to meet lots of people! You can take part in the communal activities that are arranged in many of the complexes. From day trips to talks, bingo, lunches and a whole lot more, many older people find they like living with other people in similar circumstances. But, it is up to you how much you take part. You also have a scheme manager who calls on you most days to see that you are alright or if you need any help and access to the Nottingham On Call alarm service.

Our sheltered housing has the following facilities:

  • Scheme manager
  • Permanent Nottingham-on-Call emergency alarm service
  • Consessionary TV licence
  • Lounge and kitchen facilities
  • Communal gardens
  • Lift (some complexes with a first floor and highrise blocks)

Increased peace of mind

All our sheltered schemes and many others are linked to the Nottingham On Call emergency alarm service. This provides help 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year at the pull of a cord or the press of a button. For a small charge which is paid at the same time as your rent, this will help you to feel reassured that help is available at all times.

Most of our sheltered housing complexes also have good lighting and secure fences.

Where can I find sheltered housing?

We have sheltered housing in lots of areas across the city. Use the links on the left to find out more.
