Right to repair

Nottingham City Homes has a legal obligation to carry out repairs to the properties we manage.

The Right to Repair Scheme was introduced in April 1994 to protect the rights of all council tenants. The scheme states that council tenants have the right to have certain small urgent repairs done quickly and easily, where it might affect their health, safety or security.

If a repair isn’t carried out on time, tenants can ask us to get another contractor to carry out the work. If the second contractor fails to complete the repair on time, the tenant has the right to compensation.

Repairs included in the Right to Repair scheme

  • Unsafe electrical sockets
  • Leaking roof
  • Blocked sink, bath or basin
  • Toilets which won’t flush
  • Loose or broken banisters and handrails.

We include these in our list of emergency repairs. We aim to attend and make safe all emergency repairs within four hours of them being reported and complete any follow up work within three working days.

Call the Repairs Contact Centre on 0115 915 2222 to tell us what repairs need to be done.

Once the repair has been raised we must tell you:

  • What the repair is
  • Who will be completing the repair
  • The date and time the contractor will call
  • When the deadline is for completion.

If the repair is not completed in the set time frame, you have a right to compensation. Initial compensation is £10 with an additional £2 for every extra day you wait. The maximum amount for a claim is £50.
