Your tenancy

The information on these pages tells you all about your tenancy and what to do if your situation changes.

We have a range of services to help you make the most of your tenancy

When you have successfully bid for a property using the HomeLink scheme or carried out a mutual exchange, you will have become one of Nottingham City Homes' tenants.

You will have been given a tenancy agreement which lists out your rights and what we expect of you as one of our tenants. This will either have been in April 2008 when we issued a new one or when you signed for your home if this was after 1st April 2008. If you have lost your tenancy agreement, please contact your area housing office for a copy.

As a tenant, we will expect you to do a number of things:

  • pay your rent on time
  • not owe us any rent (called 'rent arrears')
  • tell the benefit section of Nottingham City Council if your entitlement to housing or council tax benefit has ended
  • carry out your tenancy in a proper way, allowing your neighbours quiet enjoyment of their homes
  • not to take part in any unlawful anti-social behaviour such as playing loud music late at night, late night DIY, allowing your home to be used for selling/taking drugs, letting your dogs bark for long periods of time, etc
  • let us know if your circumstances change, for example if your partner comes to live with you or your adult child leaves home
  • allow us to service your gas appliances once a year (required by law)
  • let us know if you want to run a business from your home. You must get permission from us to do this, but we may refuse
  • only keep pets if you have a garden. There are some excpetions so take a look at your tenant handbook for more information.

Principal home

You must live in your property as your only home.

This means you cannot live anywhere else as a tenant or owner. If you do you may lose your rights as a secure tenant and we can serve a notice to bring your tenancy to an end.

This is not a full list of responsibilities - they are all explained in your tenancy agreement and in this section of the web site.
