Ending your tenancy

When you want to end your tenancy, you need to give us at least 4 weeks' notice in writing.

This notice period needs to end on a Sunday's date. We may agree to end the notice period earlier in certain circumstances.

To properly end your tenancy you need to:

  • allow us to inspect your home before the tenancy termination date and show possible new tenants round
  • give all the keys in to your local housing office by 12.00 noon on the Monday after the tenancy ends or you may be charged for an extra week's rent. We do not charge rent on a daily rate
  • pay all the rent you owe and any arrears. Remember, you pay rent in arrears. This means you pay rent for the week you have already lived in the property. So, at the least, there will be one week's rent to pay on the tenancy termination date
  • clear the property by the time you hand in the keys. There must not be any rubbish, old furniture, carpets, food or anything else left in the property. If you cannot clear any items, we will clear what is necessary and charge you for doing this. The amount will depend on how much there is to clear
  • repair any damage caused to your home through neglect, for example damage to doors, plaster and decorations caused by neglect. If you do not, we will carry out the work and charge you
  • redirect your post
  • tell your bank and credit card companies of your move
  • arrange for your gas, electricity and water meters to be read before you leave so you can get accurate final bills.

Finally, leave all your doors, windows and shed and garage doors secure. We can then start the void, or empty property process.

If you want to discuss this in more detail, please contact your housing patch manager at your area housing office.
