We have all been deeply affected by the loss of life at Grenfell Tower. As residents know, since the tragedy we have been reviewing our approach to fire safety. We are taking all the reasonable steps we can to keep our residents safe and reduce the risk of a tragedy like Grenfell ever happening in a property we manage.
The national guidance, which applies to all landlords, says that communal corridors in blocks of flats or independent living schemes must be kept as clear as possible – especially from material which could spread fires between flats. This includes Christmas decorations that may not be fire retardant.
We are not in any way suggesting residents can’t decorate inside their own homes for Christmas. Our communication with residents has been clear - we have asked residents not to leave rubbish or store mobility scooters in corridors, and not to put up Christmas decorations in communal areas.
We don’t want to dampen the Christmas spirit, so we’re providing fire resistant Christmas trees and decorations in the communal lounges at our independent living schemes. We think that’s the most responsible way to keep people safe, while still celebrating the festive period.
